What an inspirational video…

“Keep it running wild within you… Let it keep pushing you to discover your passions and make you crazy enough to chase them…”

I’ve worked with L’image for a number of years now and I am a huge fan of their unique mounting process called Laminage… It is a much more modern and elegant alternative to traditional framing… Not only is it a super clean and ultra modern way to present photographs & other artwork, it is also a very durable mounting methodology that is 98% UV protected, non glaring and moisture resistant. Even though Laminage is their signature product they also specialize in premium quality gallery wrapped canvases and traditional custom framing products as well… The quality of work and workmanship is second to none and I am proud to be one of many talented local artist they represent… So the next time you are at the Town East Mall, take a few minutes to drop by L’image and check out a few of my pieces and other fine artwork from local, national and international artists.

As an introductory offer to all my Facebook fans and Blog subscribers, If you mention the word “True North” you are eligible to receive 10% off the list price…

This was a photograph I took in 2009 at the U2’s 360 concert in Norman, Oklahoma. To be honest I wasn’t even a big a fan of U2 before I went to this concert. My friends literally had to drag me to it, but boy am I glad they did. To this day it is probably the best concert I’ve ever been to.

As you probably know professional cameras are strictly prohibited at these concerts, plus I had managed to break my little point and shoot camera playing paintball earlier that year, so I went to the concert with no camera at all. But luckily Hector let me borrow his little point and shoot camera at the concert…

We only had general admission tickets and we were not particularly early getting to the concert either, but thanks to Ale’ charm and a bit of luck we somehow managed to get into the inner circle of the 360 stage (in the belly of the spaceship so to say). We were not particularly close to the big stage, but really close to the outer ring though. It was probably just dumb luck but it turned out to be best spot anybody could have asked for, no matter how much they paid…

So to the picture itself… Like I mentioned before we were very lucky to be at the right place at the right time. One of the spotlights happened to hit Bono from the opposite side so all we could really see was just a shadow of his profile, but he just happened to be standing exactly sideways relative to us, and the beam of light cut through the darkness like a laser beam… Hector wanted to make a poster of this photograph as soon after I had posted this picture on Facebook, but it took nearly 3 years for this to happen… LOL … I wanted to add some of my favorite lyrics into the print, but it turned out to be much more complicated task than I had initially anticipated… Nick’s help at the very last hour was invaluable… We almost missed the submission deadline fiddling around trying to get the perfect arrangement of the texts, but we made it with something like 7 minutes on the clock…

This particular print is 5ft x 1.5ft

Invisible words...

These words might look like a bunch of random texts, but you wouldn’t believe the trouble I had to go to, not just for the arrangement (thanks a lot again Nick for helping out with it), but to make it almost be invisible. With proper lighting, it is almost impossible to see it even if you standing only a couple of feet away. I am really pleased how it turned… This is one of those instances where you really have to see it in person to appreciate all the intricacies of this piece.

Boys and their toys…

This is a photoshoot Mark has been wanting to do for a long time now. He finally needed some new tires, so earlier this summer we finally got together for a little shoot.
These cars are no more than big toys we sit in and drive… Its amazing how you turn into a 5 year old kid, especially when you get three petrol-heads like Nemo, Mark and I together. Anyways it was a really fun shoot…

One of my favorite photographs from this shoot… It almost looks like one of the shots from the original BMW e39 M5 Commercial when it was introduced over 10 years ago…

As the name implies Final Friday is held on the last Friday of every month. It is an event held in the Wichita’s Downtown area and the surrounding vicinity. This is what’s called an Art Crawl or Gallery Crawl.  Art galleries, museums, restaurants and retail shops around Wichita stay open late and welcome visitors. It goes from around 7:00pm to 10:00 (I think… don’t quote me on this) and its a completely free event. Even if you are not the artsy type… Its worth checking it out (its something different and plus you are already in downtown so you can go out afterwords). I would recommend you wear comfortable footwear though (leave your high heels at home… LOL) because you will have to walk a lot if you want to see a few things. For more info check out these websites http://www.wichitaarts.com/exhibitions/ and  http://www.downtownwichita.org/have_fun-first_final_friday.php. I don’t get to go to these as much as I used to (I am lucky if I get to go once or twice a year) but here are a few photographs from the April 2010 Final Friday…

Check out my Studio’s Facebook page for lots more pics @ http://www.tinyurl.com/truenfacebook

A bird completely made of wire…  Plus there was actually some live music at this gallery as well…

This is just a dirty window with a plant on it. But I thought it looked interesting for some odd reason…

The aim of this game to see who can go the furthest without stepping outside of the bricks… I think… LOL…

Douglas Bridge

This seems like a great little dance studio… I may actually sign up for some lessons here…

But no way I am wearing these shoes though… LOL…

I remember seeing one of the original pictures of this building or something similar at Old Mill Tasty Shop. I’ll have to look for it the next time I go to lunch there. BTW… this is one of my absolute favorite restaurants in town. It is a 50’s style Malt Shop (they sell old fashioned ice cream and malt shakes and stuff) but they also server some of the best Lasagna I have ever tried (only on Wednesdays though), plus their creamy tomato ranch is simply delicious. If any of you happened to be in downtown around lunch time (especially on Wednesdays), give me a ring, I’d be happy to join you for lunch there… I think i am going a bit off topic here :-}

These following few pictures remind me of the song from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young… Its goes something like

“Teach your children well,
… blah … blah.. blah…
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you’ll be know by.”

Plus I really like how the lighting turned out in these pics…

Another neat place downtown is Mead’s Corner. Its actually at the corner of Emporia and Douglas.  They have great paninis , gelatos and espressos… Plus they have free WiFi so its a great alternative to Starbucks or Barns & Noble if you want to study or work… Plus they have some neat artwork from time to time and host local musicians and bands as well. Check out their website www.meadscorner.com

This is a great gallery as well. It’s at the tip of my tongue, but i just can’t remember the name…

Rock Island Studios…

Dock 410… This is one of my favorite stores/galleries in town. Its got the one of most random and eclectic collection of antiques, artwork and cool random stuff . The Owner of this joint is a pretty cool guy, plus he is a photographer himself. If you are looking for something unique to decorate your house or appt, it’s definitely worth checking this place out.

Another gallery on Commerce St…

I don’t know what to say… The person who made these is either a genius, idiot or just a pervert … LOL…

hummm… Interesting positions….

This is actually a vertical piece, but i thought this was the most interesting way perspective to view it, from the floor looking up… The shadows almost look like that of people…

Probably one of the best pieces of that night… Made from what seems to be one solid piece of wood…

Not sure what this is…

Another one of my favorites… this was just shapes of hands made of electrical tape stuck on top a sheet of transparent plastic. It is such a simple thing, but a brilliant idea…

!!!

Probably one of the last people to leave that night…

This is the kind of work I hope to do one day… The guy is a talented photographer no doubt, but what’s unique about him is the subjects he chooses to shoot… The photographs of the Mantawai and Abyssinia tribes are simply stunning… Check out his portfolio site at http://www.joeyl.com/… especially the “Faces of a Vanishing World” series.

This video on the other hand… I thought was hilarious… LOL…

Gypsy Kings Concert…

A couple of months ago I was in Colorado with a few good friends for a Gypsy King Concert. It was at the Red Rock Amphitheater outside of Denver. It is honestly one of the best venues I have ever been to. The Amphitheater is carved out of some sort of massive natural red limestone. It is a stunning venue overlooking Denver in the far background. The concert was amazing, the weather was perfect and couldn’t have asked for a better group of friends. Thanks to all the girls who helped me sneak my camera into the concert in pieces…LOL,  and thank you Gino and Erin for being such amazing hosts and showing us a good time…

Mountain Goats

These are the majestic Mountain Goats of Mount Evens. This is one of my favorite photographs from a little trip to Colorado a couple of months ago. These majestic and nimble animals do live on the roof of the world in the most precarious of places, but these animals do enjoy some of the most spectacular views of the Rockies Mountain Range.  This shot almost didn’t happen for so many reasons, but I climbed up steep mountain cliff in my sandals to get the shot…  (I was so mad at myself for leaving my Vibram Five Fingers behind)… LOL… I didn’t have time to switch to my 200mm telephoto lens, so with my 55mm lens I had to get real close to get this shot. To be honest, a little too close for comfort. I didn’t realize how close I had gotten to them, till one of them looked at me funny, and those horns looked even sharper up close… I really didn’t want to take the quick way down the whole fourteen hundred some odd feet… LOL…
